The notion of creativity has always been difficult to clarify in relation to intellectual activity.

Can this criterion usefully be applied to the products of creative writing? Teachers hoping to stimulate their pupils into the production of new and original pieces of writing presumably think it can. Differences of opipion which exist are over what qualifies as a new original creative piece of writing. One such divisive issue concerns the standpoint from which judgement of originality will be made. Must the piece of writing stand the test of public originality, of being deemed a new creation which no one has produced before, or does it qualify if it satisfies the condition of being a new creation for the individual?
