Simple Lists The straightforward solution to the dilemma of using unstructured text in contemporary computerized nursing information systems is to standardize a terminology. This is accomplished by agreeing in advance on all of the expressions we might want to use, and by presenting these expressions in a list (Figure 1). Describing nursing care is just a case of selecting all relevant expressions from the list and transcribing them into the nursing record or even selecting them from a pick list on a computer screen.
