Is this the case here, too, that because Frankenstein is a precursor to the genre of science fiction, it is excluded? Is Frankenstein too popular to be included in the canon?

F ilm lore: Why are almost all of the film versions so vastly different from the novel? The first stage versions of Frankenstein, several of which appeared in Shelley’s lifetime, and even before the 1831 revised edition of the novel came out, contained a number of changes to the novel that endure in film versions today: “an inarticulate monster, a bumbling laboratory assistant, an angry crowd in search of the monster, and a cataclysmic ending in which creature and creator perish together” (Hitchcock 88).

Thus Frankenstein becomes a cautionary tale of what happens when men try to live without women, and clearly it has disastrous results. The first introduction begins with a vague, overly broad sentence; cites unclear, undeveloped examples; and then moves abruptly to the very weak thesis. Notice, too, how a reader deprived of the paper’s title does not know the title of the story that the paper will analyze.
