Her eyes gave him no sign of love or farewell or recognition” (51). Just as yellow had been drained earlier in the story into a faded, dull color, here the brightness of white is diminished to the quality of paleness, the ghostly color of Eveline’s symbolic death at the close of the story. We see, then, that Joyce’s use of color and light in “Eveline” is complex and incorporates some unexpected transformations of bright colors into pale and dull shadows of themselves. They are washed out as if by the seas that tumble around Eveline’s heart as she stands frozen by the passenger ship.

The “black mass” of the hull represents not only the darkness of the unknown and despair but also plays on the religious cage around Eveline and the Roman Catholic Mass that is one of the many reasons why she is so paralyzed. Seeing it, her lips moved “in silent fervent prayer” (51). As Lee Spinks suggests, “The repressive mechanism of religious morality and paternal prohibition roots her to the spot,” and “Eveline has internalised the repressive codes of her culture to the degree that life is unthinkable without them” (59).

When Joyce was young, his father was successful, and for several years the family lived in Bray, a fashionable suburb of Dublin, and James was able to attend the prestigious Clongowes Wood College (just as his future protagonist Stephen Dedalus did). However, John Joyce’s poor financial planning and decision making began to take a toll on the family, necessitating their move from Bray to a smaller home in a less expensive neighborhood and their son’s move to a Christian Brothers school (considered second rate to the Jesuits at the time).
