Academic Language Proficiency for Struggling Adolescent Students Our review of the lives of only a few struggling adolescent learners shows that they exhibit different characteristics and that a number of factors contribute to their school success or failure. This review helps show why the administrators at Wayland High School had difficulty deciding who their English learners were and how to help them. Although there are different types of ELLs, it is clear that all these students need to be able to access academic texts and to understand and analyze what they read.

Most of those students are SELs and ELLs who are long-term English learners or limited formal schooling students. These students need a great deal of support. Schools need to provide instruction that will enable them to read academic texts, think critically, solve problems, and respond to what they learn orally and in writing.
