The small wooden wheel that is attached using a bracket from the bottom of the light was added by making it out of copper wire and a few drops of Zap-A-Gap. That plaque was then attached to the strut using a dab of Testors’ Glosscote. The finished and painted landing gear strut. The red element at the bottom of the strut is the tow hook, which was created by a simple piece of copper wire bent into a loop, CA glued to the end of that fork and painted red. The reflector gunsight was from Cutting Edge; all it needed was a few wires and a clear acetate lens.
Styrene to the side of the scoop, covered it with Mr Surfacer 500 and sanded it down when dry. To better represent the DF loop, I used one from the Tamiya P-47D kit. This was the perfect size and only needed to be thinned a little. The Verlinden exposed engine When planning this build, I felt that it was vital to use the exposed engine designed for this kit by Verlinden. I started by using a Dremel tool to grind down the raised lip along the front edge of the fuselage to make room for the resin firewall, which was then smoothed out with a metal file.
Hole was drilled into the hub and into the base of the resin prop blade to accept a brass rod. The rod assures a strong joint. I then glued the resin blades into place and set them at the correct angle. The thin and elegant shape of the propeller blades was better represented by the Ultracast resin set rather than the kit blades. The old blades are simply cut off of the mounting ring and the new blades were pinned and glued to the ring using brass wire and CA glue. One final look at the major assembly before it gets turned over to the ‘paint shop’.
